A CARAVAN owner has called on police to do more to protect residents amid a spate of arson attacks across Southampton.

The incidents in Southampton have caused thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Police are linking 13 arson attacks and have appealed for witnesses to catch the person who has struck across the city.

A CCTV image has been released of a person on a bike who police want to speak to in connection with the incidents.

Now another victim of the fires has called on more to be done to help track down the attacker.

Dawn Hawkins, whose caravan was destroyed in a fire, kept her the vehicle outside her daughter’s house off Hinkler Road.

But just days before the 61-year-old market researcher’s family were about to set off on holiday, it was set on fire.

Dawn’s daughter – who is still suffering from shock after the event – was woken at around 4am on August 3.

Dawn said: “Everybody was asleep. All the windows were open because it was so hot.

“My daughter heard this strange noise so she got up and could see the flames through the window.

“They got up and realised the caravan was on fire.

“My daughter got the children out. Her husband tried to get the garden hose on it before the fire engines got there. They had set a fire actually underneath the caravan.”

Smoke from the fire got into the house – and now Dawn’s daughter says she has not slept through the night since the incident.

Her one-year-old son hasn’t been able to sleep either.

Dawn added: “My one-year-old grandson doesn’t want to go in the bedroom.

“All my son’s stunt kites that my husband bought him about 20 years ago are all gone. The caravan was packed full of stuff, all the children’s toys, ready for them to go on holiday.”

Now Dawn is calling for the police to do more.

She said: “It’s really upset me. If they had not woken up the whole house could have gone up.

“It could have been really different.

“We all pay our taxes for the police to protect us. It doesn’t feel like they are doing that.”

As reported, police have launched an investigation after three other caravans were torched this week.

Detective Inspector Adam Edwards said: “We would urge anyone who owns a caravan or a motorhome not sleep to in it whilst parked outside your house or on your driveway.

Anyone with information on the incident can call police on 101, quoting 44180318483, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
