PUBLIC Health England’s Change4Life roadshow will be in Southampton this weekend to get more city families active. The roadshow, which will be held at Westquay Shopping Centre on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 September, will be encouraged to take on a range of fun activities designed to help improve their speed, hand and eye coordination, stamina, agility and strength. These include obstacle courses, ball games and mini hurdles, which will all help to increase their heart rates. Experts recommend that children do at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day, yet they say just 23 per cent of boys and 20% of girls aged 5 to 15 years currently meet this recommendation. Every 10-minute burst of physical activity that kids complete with the new Change4Life games and challenges can help them get the 60 minutes they need each day. Cllr David Shields, cabinet member for Health, said: “This free event will be a great way for young people to get more active with friends and family, whilst having fun. “Skills and activities will be taught that can be used at home or school to help children to get the 60 minutes of recommended physical activity required per day.”
