A DOG-FRIENDLY Winchester pub has a lot to offer, especially in the next few months.

The St James Tavern, Romsey Road, has one of the cheapest menus in the city.

It offers something for everyone at it’s quirky building with a friendly atmosphere.

Pub manager James Bennett, 35, from Winchester, has been running the pub for six years.

He said: “I really enjoy working here. The staff and customers are great. There’s a good mix of regulars and non-regulars who visit.”

James’ dog, Basil, ‘works’ at the pub alongside is owner.

Basil helps to bring in the dog-loving customers and is well-known amongst the regular punters.

The pub is also known for the wide range of events it hosts.

Every three months, a fundraising music night is held in aid of a selected charities.

Weekly events held include a quiz night every Tuesday, a burger night every Monday and a cocktail club every Friday and Saturday.

James said: “We have a pie night every Wednesday where we serve pies from a family company in Midhurst. We have other weekly events but we like to mix things up, too. Later this month we are hosting our first bingo night.”

James added: “We are looking forward to is our National Sausage Week event. In October we will have different flavoured, locally sourced sausages that you’ll be able to mix and match with different sides. We do a similar thing for national pie week in March called ‘128 Ways to Eat Pie,’ but it might sound a bit strange if we replace the word pie with sausage!”

The pub also has a un upstairs function room which can be booked for special occasions.

The full menu and other information can be found at the pub’s website.
