A MAN has been rushed to hospital after a "hazardous chemical was put into his car".

Hampshire Constabulary, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and South Central Ambulance service were alerted to the incident this morning on St Marys Street, to reports that a man was feeling unwell in his car.

HFRS said the male believed a chemical had been put into his car and crews from St Marys, Redbridge and Winchester fire stations used breathing apparatus to investigate the scene.

A spokesperson for HFRS said that following the investigation no contamination was found and it turned out to be a "false alarm".

The scene was made safe and has since been handed over to police, who are assessing the scene, which was on Harrison's Cut near the university halls.

SCAS said: "We received a call at 6.44am from a male patient in a car on St Mary’s Street who called us saying he was unwell.

"From the information he gave us we informed police, the fire service and sent our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) to the scene along with a paramedic team leader in a rapid response vehicle and an ambulance.

"HART were not required for their specialist capabilities in the end and he has now been taken to University Hospital Southampton for further assessment."
