WINCHESTER is one step closer to having another hospice, as the fundraising appeal secures a chairman and board of trustees.

The fundraisers are aiming to convert Burrell House on Romsey Road.

Nick Vaughan, a senior partner at Paris Smith Solicitors, is the new chairman. He said: “I am very pleased to take up this role. It is almost impossible to believe that Winchester does not have a hospice, with patients requiring this care currently need to travel to Andover or Southampton.

Elizabeth Padmore, chairman of Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Nick brings with him a wealth of knowledge about the charitable sector and is well connected to the local community.”

The trustees, all volunteers, include: Nigel Atkinson, the Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire; Mark Byford, former deputy director general at BBC; Amanda Isbister, retired GP; Iain Steel of Richard Steel and Partners; Simon Cramp, town planner for Hampshire County Council; John Theophilus, retired Chartered Accountant; Dr Lara Alloway, medical director at Hampshire Hospitals.

The appeal needs £2.5m to convert Burrell House into a ten-bed facility.

A further £1.1m still needs to be raised.
