POLICE and paramedics rushed to a city centre garage last night.

Officers were seen outside the Texaco garage in Queensway, Southampton, yesterday.

It is believed they attended after a man was 'attacked' in the area.

Witnesses said a man, believed to be in his 30s, suffered a 'nasty looking head injury'.

A spokesperson for South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) said: "We received an emergency 999 call from a member of the public at 19.22 last night reporting that a male had been assaulted on Queensway and sustained a serious head injury.

"We sent an ambulance to the scene and after initial treatment he was then taken to University Hospital Southampton."

Police have now confirmed a man has been arrested on suspicion of causing grevious bodily harm with intent.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Police said: "We were called at 7.24pm last night (Sept 13) to a report of a serious assault against a 48-year-old man outside Palmerston House on Queensway, Southampton.

"The man suffered serious head injuries and was transported to hospital.

"A 41-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.  

"He remains in police custody at this time."
