WITH twirling baton skills and nifty steps to match, more than 400 majorettes, from 10 groups, entertained scores of spectators with virtuoso performances on Southampton Sport Centre.
The three-hour display was opened by the mayor of Southampton, Councillor John Minto on June 11, 1978. He and his wife watched the majority of the performances before having to leave to attend other engagements
Mike Martin, who was in charge of the Matenette Squadron of Majorettes, said he was “excited by the response.” The proceeds were for the Mayoral Appeal Fund.
