SOUTHAMPTON Airport is to increase its current runway by 170 yards on land they say belongs to them (Echo, September 19).

No dispute there.

I noticed it will bring lower aircraft to the Eastleigh-Portsmouth railway that fringes the north side of the field. I suspect there will be a certain amount of trepidation by railway commuters and others when these larger aircraft roar low over the trains. The noise level in Upper Woodmill lane area is bound to increase.

But that's the price of advancement.
