FIREFIGHTERS have rushed to a blaze at allotments in Weston.

They were called to the fire involving two sheds in the Newtown Road allotments at 2.47 this afternoon.

Three pumps from Hightown and St Mary’s station rushed to the scene.

It has since been extinguished.

Gardeners Angela Smith and Janet Cooper were tending their allotments when they realised the shed had caught fire.

Angela said: "There was a lot of smoke. It sparked into the shed - but it wasn't near the shed. We couldn't have controlled it so I dialled 999.

"We were worried because there could have been gas canisters in there."

Janet added: "It was quite scary. It just got worse and worse. All his seedlings have gone up and they were ready to plant out."

The shed belonged to Tony Smith, who said: "I had had a bonfire going since about 10am. I had it in a steel container. Because of the wind the sparks went through the holes at the bottom.

"I think that's what happened when we went for a cup of tea."
