ONE person died and another is seriously hurt after an suspected arson attack on a block of flats in Hampshire today.

More than 50 firefighters were called to tackle a huge ''suspicious'' blaze at a four-storey block of flats today, rescuing 19 people.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to the incident shortly before 1am.

Using ladders and the specialist turntable ladder, firefighters rescued 19 occupants after the fire broke out in the communal stairway of the block in Milton Road, Portsmouth.

A statement from the fire service said: ''At the height of the blaze, seven appliances with over 50 firefighters using two main water jets, four hose reels, and 20 breathing apparatus sets were required to fight the fire and bring it under control.

''The incident is being treated as suspicious and scenes-of-crime officers from Hampshire Constabulary are investigating the cause of the fire.

''Hampshire's Arson Task Force, a dedicated unit set up earlier this year, has been brought in to help investigate the incident - with Watch Manager Graham Howlett, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service's fire investigation dog handler, also attending the scene with his specially-trained dog, Saxon."

Fire Control mobilised crews from Southsea, Copnor, Cosham, Havant, Waterlooville, and Eastleigh to tackle the blaze.

A police spokesman warned of road closures while the investigation is being carried out.
