THE DAILY Echo remembers life in Southampton in October 1958 through images from Daily Echo photographers of the time.
It was a big month for new BBC programmes as both Grandstand and Blue Peter were aired for the first time. Blue Peter is still running but Grandstand ceased to be in 2007.
October was also a big month for air travel as BOAC utilised Comet jets to become the first airline to fly passengers across the Atlantic. Later that month the Short SC.1, an experimental aircraft, made its first free vertical flight.
The sovereignty of Christmas Island was transferred from the United Kingdom to Australia.
