A LARGE vehicle carrier became stuck after 'not following' a diversion route set up for major works on a Southampton roundabout.

The abnormal load became stuck on Millbrook Roundabout earlier today and is currently blocking an inside lane.

According to Southampton City Council's travel update page, the vehicle 'did not follow diversions', set up as part of a 28-week revamp of the busy roundabout.

The vehicle is stuck because it is too heavy to use the flyover.

In a tweet, Southampton Travel said: "There is an abnormal load stuck on Millbrook Rd inbound partially blocking the inside lane.

"Vehicle did not follow diversions - we are investigating solutions , however, this may take time."

A spokesperson for transport Hutchinson company declined to comment at the scene.

A Southampton City Council worker added: “They weren’t following the diversion signs. They might have to cut the railings to get it down to the docks.”

Multi-million works on Millbrook Roundabout started on Monday.

The work resulted in long tailbacks on major roads in the area, including the M27 and the M271.

More delays are expected throughout the first phase of the 28-week scheme.

Daily Echo:

Phase one of the scheme involves the northern side of the roundabout, with drivers unable to use the sliproad off Redbridge Road, the southern end of Wimpson Lane and a short section of the northbound carriageway of Tebourba Way.

A statement on the city council’s website says: “Given the importance of this roundabout, the rebuilding of the foundations is essential to provide long-term stability for the city’s road network.

“The scale of the work required is substantial and involves the complete removal and rebuilding of the roundabout’s foundations down to over a metre in depth.”

Millbrook Flyover will remain open in both directions throughout the project.
