IT’S about time that there was a crackdown on parking on pavements.

In the Southampton street where I live this is becoming a daily occurrence.

There are local authorities where this practice has become illegal and I wish this would be adopted nationwide.

Modern cars appear to be very big and heavy these days and parking on pavements must weaken the surface and could lead to collapsed pavements.

Parking on pavements is also extremely anti social. Cars take up such a huge width of the footpath that is sometimes impossible for a pram or push chair to get through.

It is also dangerous for pedestrians who are forced into road and particularly hazardous for the blind who are in danger of walking into these obstructions.

It is obvious that we are running out of road space in this country and a major reason why our neighbourhoods are being cluttered with cars. It is just endless metal on metal.

The growing trend of commercial vehicles being parked overnight in residential areas is also adding to this growing problem.

Big automobiles might be okay in Texas but that they are not compatible with the size of our roads and car parks.

Perhaps we should take a long hard look at car ownership in this country. Many households have more than one car. But there are some that clearly don’t need two.

This might not be popular but an increase in vehicle excise duty on the second car might have to be introduced to deter unnecessary car ownership.

This would help to take the burden off our crowded roads and residential areas and perhaps help to stop the increasing habit of parking on pavements.
