A DEMONSTRATION at a Hampshire refinery didn't happen because protestors did not turn up.

As reported the Echo was told workers were planning a protest outside the Fawley Refinery / Petrochemical Complex this morning.

A source, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Echo the protest was due to a row over bonus payments.

A Hampshire police spokesperson said: "Officers were outside Fawley Refinery / Petrochemical Complex because we were made aware of a potential protest scheduled to take place this morning, however no protesters attended."

A refinery spokesperson said: "We understand that there was going to be some sort of protest or disruption.

"We prepared for it. The police were aware but actually it didn't come to anything.

"We believe it was to do with a dispute between contracting companies and their staff regarding a bonus payment."

They added: "The anticipated disruption involving contractor staff at the ExxonMobil Fawley entrance gates did not materialise this morning.

"We work closely with all contracting companies working on the site, and hope that the parties can resolve the matter swiftly.

"Safety remains our priority as the Fawley site continues to focus on our operations."
