PUPILS at a Southampton school were the first to have a go at new air quality kit.

The youngsters from Bitterne Park Primary School were treated to a visit by environment experts from My Journey Southampton.

Their new Air Quality Exhibit and Get Cycle Savvy Pit Stop is a set of activities designed to educate city kids about the health impact of air pollution.

It features a set of lungs which respond when users turn various dials to answer travel related questions - as well as an air quality themed quiz, badges, role play, a drawing competition, creating slogans and even writing an air quality rap.

The event at Bitterne Manor Primary School was the latest in a series of activities at the school to promote the importance of active travel in tackling air pollution, which has seen them get scooter training, ‘Smoothie Bike’ activities, Sustrans’ Big Pedal and an assembly focusing on the Be Bright Be Seen cycling campaign.

They have also carried out diffusion tube testing experiments to measure levels of nitrogen dioxide around the school.

Councillor Stephen Leggett, Cabinet Member for Green City, said: “Bitterne Manor Primary School has worked really hard to highlight the issues surrounding poor air quality and the benefits of active travel in combating these. Events like today’s are a fun and effective way of reminding pupils of the small but important changes they can make on the school run and supporting them to put these into practice. Well done Bitterne Manor Primary School – I look forward to seeing your good work continue.”
