RESCUE crews and paramedics raced to help a man after he fell 90ft from the Itchen Bridge.

The man sustained serious injuries in the fall, which took place around 10am this morning.

Hill Head Rescue Team rushed the scene, but were stood down en route.

Instead, the man was taken into the care of South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS).

A spokesperson for SCAS said the service sent an ambulance crew, an ambulance officer, a critical care crew and a team from its Hazardous Area Response Team (HART).

A road crew from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance also attended.

The man was treated for serious injuries and assessed at the scene.

He was then rushed to Southampton General Hospital for treatment.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesperson said: "We received a report at 10.08am regarding concerns for the welfare of a man in water near the Itchen Bridge.

"The man was subsequently taken to hospital by ambulance."

One witness, who was driving over the bridge at the time, said: "The man was walking along the bridge and then he just sat on the edge and went over.

"I stopped my car and looked over the edge and he was in the water.

"There were other people there who saw it."
