A HAMPSHIRE primary school student has carved a pumpkin with a commemorative design.

This year marks the 100 year anniversary of the end of the First World War.

Across the country thousands of people will be marking this landmark point in history.

A student from The New Forest has got creative with her commemoration.

Evie Chapman Russell, a year 6 student at Bartley Primary school entered a pumpkin competition which was held at Cadnam Garden centre.

However, Evie's pumpkin did not have a typical spooky design. .

In the front of the pumpkin there is a carving of a soldier kneeling in front of a cross and on the lid Evie painted a poppy.

Evie's mum Cleo told the Daily Echo that Evie wanted to do a First World War themed pumpkin after she heard about the Centenary.

Cleo said: "Me and Evie were chatting about how it was the 100 year anniversary since the First World War and we spoke about how my great grandfather served during The Second World War.

"Later on when we were discussing what Evie would like to do for the pumpkin competition she said she would like to do something for the 100 year anniversary of the end of The First World War."

With the help of her mum and her 13 year-old brother Lewis, Evie found a soldier templates that she could use to carve into the pumpkin.

Evie and then Lewis then carved out the design.

Cleo said: "They are both so creative.

"Evie came up with the idea of painting the poppy on the lid as it looked like a poppy shape

"There were so many lovely entries in the competition but this design was a lovely way to commemorate the centenary of the World War."
