A MASSIVE change hit the Totton and Eling Carnival in 1969.
The event held on May 5 that year was the very first to have been held on a Saturday.
The carnival floats left Testwood Recreation Ground to the music of the Southampton Albion Band, led by the Fair Queen Cherry Edsall and her attendants in a horse-drawn carriage.
Floats were of a high standard, notably Moon Madness by the Totton Young Conservatives and the impressive Rose Queen float of St Monica’s Sunday School.
Totton House of Horrors by Totton Youth Club presented a gruesome scene complete with guillotine, axeman and chained maidens.
An amusing entry that raised plenty of laughter from the thronging crowds was one based on the John Lennon and Yoko Ono lie-in.
A colourful float was presented by Ampthill Youth Club, Viking Queen – made up of 3,127 paper flowers.
Another eye-catching float was 2nd Testwood Brownies’ Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Toyshop.al - Guy Fawkes - November 5, 1994 004
