A HAMPSHIRE school has created a permanent memorial to soldiers killed during the First World War.

Noadswood School in North Road, Dibden Purlieu, decided to honour 30 people from the Hythe area who made the ultimate sacrifice during the 1914-18 conflict.

The memorial has been covered with 100 acrylic poppies the pupils made in their own time.

Year 8 pupil Sophie Gasnier said: "Making the poppies was really fun.

"We put pieces of red acrylic in poppy shapes into an oven. We then took them out and moulded them to make them 3D.

"After this we bent thin copper rods to make the stalks of the poppies. These were then super-glued to the poppies and then a black button with the Noadswood crest was inserted in the middle.

"What I loved about the poppies is that each of them was unique. It was a great way to commemorate the end of the war."

Fellow pupil Isla Ingram added: "I loved seeing it come to life from a plastic sheet to an acrylic poppies."
