HUNDREDS of people flocked to a Southampton park to celebrate the centenary of Poland's independence.

Waving dozens of flags, residents gathered at Palmerston Park to sing the national anthem and mark the 100th anniversary of Poland's independence.

The event was organised by SOS Polonia Trust, the Southampton-based organisation which provides support to Polish people in the city.

Founder Barbara Storey, who took part in the event, said: "For 123 years we didn't exist. It is so important for us that we celebrate. It is fantastic for all of us to come together and sing the national anthem. We are grateful to Britain for having welcomed us and we are happy to be part of this community."

Mrs Storey said there are more than 20,000 Polish people living in Southampton and more than 200 took part in the celebrations held yesterday.
