HAMPSHIRE diabetics are set to get a fresh approach in new cookery classes.

The West Hampshire Community Diabetes team is launching FreshClub on November 14, which is also national diabetes day.

The team, run by Southern Health Foundation Trust (SHFT) is providing its patients by giving them the tools they need to manage better at home, at No. 5 Bridge Street Restaurant, Winchester.

FreshClub will be accessible for anyone who has been diagnosed themselves, or lives with or looks after someone with diabetes.

Sarah Woodman, Head of Diabetes Service, SHFT “There is a lot of advice and information available for people with diabetes which can sometimes be confusing and overwhelming. We are really pleased to be working with Fresh Kitchen Cookery School to provide practical sessions to help people with diabetes put dietary advice in practice with easy to prepare meal ideas suitable for the whole family.”

The four-week cookery classes have been designed to increase confidence in cooking, give new ideas for healthy meals to encourage families to eat more vegetables, meet other people who live with diabetes, get hints for eating more fibre and whole grains and give recipe ideas that the whole family can enjoy.

Each session will be hands on, with an interactive way of sharing tips and suggestions, and all the recipes have been carefully chosen by the diabetes team to ensure they are packed with goodness and contain all the essential nutrients needed to eat healthily.

The first week, November 14, is called family favourites, and will teach participants to cook a budget meal that the whole family can enjoy.

November 21 is all about raising your pulse rate, and how you can get more pulses into your diet.

In week three you can be taught how to cook a fresh seasonal curry with alternative rice on November 28.

The fourth week, December 5, helps diabetics and carers eat more oily fish.
