THE next phase of work to improve access for cyclists at Southampton port as part of ongoing clear air initiatives was due to start today.

The scheme will improve access for cyclists in to and out of Dock Gate 20 at the port.

The works will widen the existing footpath to create a two-way dual-use pathway, allowing easier and safer access for cyclists as they pass through the security control.

It is one of the key schemes outlined in ABP’s Air Quality Strategy.

The plan aims to improve cycle access around the port and reducing employees’ dependence on cars.

According to ABP, which runs the port, by 2023 there will be a series of new cycle lanes in the Western Docks as part of the improved cycle network.

ABP Southampton director Alastair Welch said: “We hope that by improving cycle provision around the port over the next five years we can better connect with the wider cycle network across the city. This should significantly reduce our dependence on cars and in turn further improve air quality in the city which is an important issue for us and one that we take very seriously.”

The works will start today and are expected to be completed by Christmas.

They will run alongside roadworks at Millbrook Roundabout, which are now entering their next phase.

As reported by the Daily Echo, the £8.3million scheme has caused problems for motorists in the area.

Regarding the cycle path, ABP said traffic measures will be in place on Dock Gate 20 to enable the work to be carried out safely, but access will be maintained throughout the works.

Southampton port bosses released their own air quality strategy earlier this year and said the plans can lower emissions without the need for a city-wide chargeable clean air zone.

In August this year the Port of Southampton also revealed to have more than doubled its coverage of air quality monitoring across the port in a bid to gain a more detailed picture of where to target improvements.
