A POWER cut sparked fears Winchester's Christmas lights switch-on would be hit this evening after more than 1,500 customers were affected in the city centre.
Power went off at around 3pm, with SSE saying 1,583 customers were affected in the city centre.
The traffic lights at the junction by the entrance to The Brooks Shopping Centre were also out of action for around an hour, prompting fears of rush-hour chaos on the city's one-way system.
However, the power returned just before 4pm.
An SSE spokesman said the power cut was caused by a fault in a section of underground cable.
The spokesman added that engineers are working to fix the fault, but power supplies would not be affected.
