A SOUTHAMPTON woman has set up her own support group for carers of people who suffer with mental health problems.

Natalie Waite from Sholing decided to set up the group after her daughter suffered a psychotic episode four years ago, and the only group she could find was in Shirley.

She decided to set up her own group up on the east side of Southampton.

Natalie, 56, said: “There are so many people suffering with mental illness out there and for the relatives, loved ones, carers or friends who support them daily , they are in need of support too.

“The group can’t solve their problems or make things better but we offer a listening ear and have a wealth of information between us.

“Anyone can come along and there is no pressure to talk if you don’t want to and I hope by getting the word out there more people will attend and we can help more people who feel isolated.”

The Southampton East Mental Health Carers Group meet on the second Tuesday of every month from 6.30pm to -8.30pm in the Sholing Baptist Church, Middle Road.

The group offers family members of those affected by mental illness support and information, with chances to meet others with similar experiences.

Natalie was able set the group up thanks to the charity Rethink Mental Health.

The charity, established in 1970, helps millions of people affected by mental illness and has 110 registered groups in England. Rethink also offers a range of helplines for support.
