A TEAM of builders couldn't believe their eyes when they were confronted with a giant snake on site in Hampshire.

Workers were clearing land in Netley Abbey when they came across the five foot reptile.

The drama happened as builders working for Redlane Limited wer on a building site at Netley Close.

The firm are in the process of building a house and were clearing the site of rubbish when site manager Mike Jones discovered the unusual visitor.

He said: "We were clearing land and I lifted a board and found this giant snake.

"We put it to one side and called the RSPCA.

 

"I was a little bit shocked, it was just there looking at me.

"We normally get grass snakes and adders in the UK, this one was different."

The snake was taken away my a member of the RSPCA who confirmed the snake was a non-native species.

The reptile was identified as an American Corn Snake, which the animal welfare charity believe would have once been someone's pet.

Corn snakes are a non-venomous species that are commonly found throughout the south-eastern and central United States.

The reptiles are often kept as pets, can reach 180cm in length and live up to 23 years in captivity.
