A SHOCKED nursing home worker has recalled the scenes from a horror crash in Hedge End.

Sharon Worthington’s car was hit from behind by a van, which sent her smashing through a brick wall at a Hedge End nursing home, where she thought the car was about to blow up.

The 44-year-old struggled to get out of her Peugeot 307, squeezing her way out alongside some bushes, before shouting for help. A staff member at the nursing home was able to help her over some bins that were blocking her path.

The van driver fled the scene of the crash on November 21, and is yet to be found.

Kitchen assistant at the Grange Nursing Home, on Upper Northam Road, Alana Ramsey, said: “I walked out just after it happened and I could just hear a lot of shouting and a crowd of people.

“I saw my mum helping her out the car and practically lifting her over the bins.”

The 18-year-old told the Echo how staff at the home were on hand to calm Sharon down.

She said: “It was really scary because she was breathing so fast and saying how her children were nearly orphans.

“We started calming her down and my supervisors grabbed a wheelchair from inside. It looked like she had hurt her knee but it wasn’t serious.

“She was very panicky and it took a lot to calm her down. We gave her blankets as well.”

She added: “It’s so horrible that the van driver just drove away. I hope he gets caught.”

The West End resident has two boys aged 19 and 17, and a girl aged 12.

“I thought my children were going to be orphans”, she said.

“I’m a widow. I lost my husband to cancer in 2006, and my kids were all I could think about.

“I’m so lucky I was alone in the car. I thought I was going to die. I saw my life flash before my eyes. I felt the impact of the wall, and then when the airbags popped open I knew I was alive.”
