SOUTHAMPTON residents were woken by a "shocking bang" yesterday morning after a police car collided with another vehicle.

The crash took place in St Denys Road at around 6:40am involving a Seat Leon and a Hampshire Constabulary vehicle.

Cobden bridge was temporarily closed in both directions and re-opened at around 9am.

Four people have sustained minor injuries.

Police said that the constabulary vehicle was responding to a 999 call regarding an assault.

Colin Day, 72, who has lived in St Deny's for 30 years said: "It must of happened at about half six as when I went out to get the paper at 6:40 I saw loads of blue lights.

"There were at least half a dozen police cars there at the scene.

"I was shocked as it's normally quite along this bit of road."

Another resident who has lived in St Denys for 14 years but wished not to be named said:"I heard a really loud bang, it sounded like a bomb had gone off, so I got up and had a look outside.

"The state of the police car was shocking as was the loud bang."

Emma Rai who owns Best One corner shop said: "There are crashes all the time on this road.

"I didn't see the crash but I went outside and there were so many police here."

Sam Chabra, the manager at the Premier off license said:" I went outside and had a look after I heard people shouting and sirens.

" I saw two people in the red car, they didn't seem to be badly hurt but police were asking them questions.

"There have been crashes further up the road but I have never seen any crashes in this part."

A spokesperson from South Central Ambulance service said:"We were contacted at 06:45 this morning with the caller reporting a two car collision on St Denys Road.

"We sent two ambulances, a paramedic team leader in a rapid response vehicle and our Hazardous Area Response Team to the scene (as we were initially informed that some of the occupants of the cars were trapped in their vehicles – they weren’t).

"One driver – a female – was taken to University Hospital Southampton with minor injuries."

A spokesperson from Hampshire:" No one has been arrested.

"The vehicles have been recovered.”
