DRIVERS are being warned that emergency works are set to cause "significant" delays on a Hampshire commuter route.

The works will result in a lane closure on the A35 Totton Bypass, which carries a huge amount of traffic going in and out of Southampton.

Hampshire County Council tweeted: "Lane on Totton bypass for emergency works likely to cause significant delays as we head for rush-hour.

"Difficult to avoid for some but if you can, consider using alternative routes. We'll let you know as soon as restriction comes off #notonafriday."

Cllr Rob Humby, executive member for environment and transport, aid: “Our highways teams are carrying out emergency repairs on the westbound carriageway of the A35 Totton Bypass due to a collapsed gully.

"We’ve had to close one lane to complete the repair and aim to fully open the road again later this evening.

"I’d like to reassure people that we are working to make the road safe as soon as possible, and ask that they leave more time for their journeys in the area.”
