MORE than 60 cyclists embarked on a magical glow ride through the city.

The annual event is held by My Journey, Southampton City Council's sustainable travel brand, and encourages participants to brighten up their bikes with lights, glow in the dark accessories and festive decorations.

The event also acts as an important reminder of the ‘Be Bright, Be Seen’ safety message which urges cyclists to be visible while cycling in the darker winter months.

The ride began at Avenue St Andrew's URC Church on the Avenue, where participants set off on bikes bedecked with baubles, reflectors and tinsel galore guided by ride leaders from Sustrans, HSBC UK Breeze, Cycling UK and Southampton Cargo Bicycles.

Riders were taken on two loops of the Common before heading down the city’s central parks to the Bargate, ending at the Christmas market for a truly festive finale.

Before setting off, cyclists also had the opportunity to get their bikes checked at the ‘Get Cycle Savvy Pit Stop’, which includes a free Bike Doctor Service and maintenance advice. Reflective freebies were provided to participants, while a prize was dished out for the bike with the greatest Christmas spirit.

Councillor Jacqui Rayment, deputy leader and cabinet member for transport and public realm, says: "The Glow Ride is a special date in the calendar and always proves a popular social event. It’s about getting into the festive spirit and showing that, with the correct approach, cycling can be both safe and fun at any time of year."
