THE Echo-sponsored Southampton junior tennis tournament on August 10, 1985, may have been dogged by bad weather, but that didn’t stop some fine play from taking place.

The number one seed in the boys’ under-18 singles, Chris Wilkinson, successfully defended his title with dominating play which proved too much for his opponent Vincent Gardner.

Victoria Verdon-Roe used her strong forehand to advantage in the under-18 girls’ singles final against the number-two seed Jane Flood.

Chris Tatersall won the boys’ under-16 final in an exciting match against the unseeded Daniel Lobb.

Joanne Brook faced Justine Guy in the final of the girls’ under-16 section.

The number one seed in the boy’s under-14 singles, Andrew Rogers, won and in the under-12 singles Lawrence Savage beat Chris Colby.

Jessica Churcher, the number-two seed in the girls’ under-14 singles, produced long powerful shots to beat the number-one seed Anna Molden.

Miss Echo, Julie-Ann Hose, presented the prizes.
