AN INQUEST has opened into the death of man killed in crash near Winchester.

Winchester Coroner's Court heard Eulogio Sanchez Candal, also known as 'John', was killed into the collision on the A272 at around 2.50pm last Wednesday.

Police had originally reported the collision was on the on the A31 (Ropley), near to the junction with the A272, Petersfield Road.

Pathologist Dr Adnan Al-Badri gave a preliminary cause of death for 72-year-old, of Hinckes Road, Wolverhampton, as death of multiple injuries.

Senior coroner Grahame Short adjourned the hearing for a full inquest on June 3, next year.

As previously reported, a Southampton man was arrested on suspicion of drug-driving following the collision, involving a Fiat Doblo and a Volkswagen Crafter.

Mr Candal, who was driving the Fiat, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His passenger was taken to Southampton General Hospital for treatment to minor injuries.

The 22-year-old driver of the Volkswagen, who was uninjured, was released from police custody but remains under investigation.

Officers would like to hear from anyone who was driving on either the A272 or A31 at this time and saw the collision take place at this junction.
