ON A day when most of us honoured the birth of Jesus Christ, a select band of parents were celebrating their own first comings.

Across the county, mums and dads were welcoming new infants.

Mothers such as Hayley McLaughin, Yi Zhang-Ng and Amy Cluett all brought new children into the world.

However, none had such an ordeal as mum Abigail Young who was guided through her birth while in her family conservatory on the phone.

The 18-year-old was helped by her Dad Nigel, a trainee paramedic, as she gave birth to AJ in her family’s Fareham home.

Nigel delivered his daughter’s baby with help from ambulance workers on the phone.

Abigail said: “It was a weird experience. Dad has delivered a few babies before but he wasn’t expecting to deliver this one. He went into paramedic mode...but he knew what he was doing.”

Abigail’s mum, Lorraine - who was with her at the birth - said: “He’s delivered the baby now he’s got to make the Christmas dinner.”

At Southampton’s Princess Anne Hospital, it was a race to see who would have the first Christmas Day baby.

Born first at 00.33 was Millie, with parents Hayley McLaughin and Luke Cowell and just 40 seconds later, Yi and Shu’s baby Kya was born.
