A HAMPSHIRE businessman with an illuminating message about the prospect of a no-deal Brexit has taken his campaign to the heart of government.

A van with a large brightly-lit billboard on the side has been driven through the streets of Westminster by Ian Maiden of Beaulieu.

The sign read: “Believe in Britain and a Managed Clean Break”.

Mr Maiden, who was an advertising entrepreneur for many years but now produces and finances films, said: “I’m an interested member of the public - no more, no less.

“Rather than just talk I decided to add my voice to the debate by placing this illuminated message outside Parliament.”

Mr Maiden got behind the wheel ahead of this month’s debate on whether Parliament should approve the EU withdrawal treaty negotiated by Theresa May. Defeat for Mrs May would result in a no-deal Brexit.

But Mr Maiden said: “I strongly believe Britain will experience a renewed period of prosperity once it re-engages with the fast-growing global economy.

“We are a powerful economy and will thrive in the global market. The EU itself is gradually withering away. Mrs May’s half-in, half-out proposal is aimed at placating the EU and must not be accepted.”

Mr Maiden spent two days driving around the Westminster area. He said: “There was plenty of clapping and cheering from the pavements as the van drove past.”

Asked if he planned to resume his campaign he said: “It might come back but for the moment it has served its purpose.”
