RESIDENTS are calling for CCTV after rotting turkey carcasses and other household waste were dumped at a Hampshire recycling centre.

Tonnes of “disgusting” litter that was found discarded in a car park beside the River Itchen in Southampton has now been cleared - but residents want further action.

Members of Friends of Riverside Park are calling on the council to install CCTV and barriers to prevent mass flytipping in the area.

Doug Perry, chairman of Friends of Riverside Park said: “It’s disgusting and I have been complaining bitterly for years.

“It is rat-infested and the wind blows the rubbish into the river.

“It is heartbreaking, we have 150 volunteers and many of them pick up rubbish along here but this is just too much.”

Member David John Hutchings added: “Why should we give up our time to clean it when the council don’t put any effort in?”

It has been suggested that the rubbish began to pile up a week before Christmas and grew rapidly as the holidays came to an end.

On at least one occasion a dog was seen scavenging for food in the filth.

Children’s toys, discarded rubble and a bottle of urine were among some of the dumped items found at the site.

Councillor Ivan White said: “It doesn’t surprise me.

“CCTV is a possibility but whether we would do it as a council I don’t know.

“We know the area has been prone to flytipping, it’s difficult.

“To be fair to the council we do deal with it quite quickly.

“I think the answer is we will look at it.

“The problem is, you solve it in one area and drive it to the next.”

Garry Noss, a member of the society, described the flytipping as a “disease” and has claimed the council are not doing enough to prevent it.

He said: “What we really need to do is push for camera and barriers.

“What can you do to stop them? Is there no way we can embarrass the council into acting?”
