SAINTS under-23s were narrowly beaten 3-2 at Leeds United in the Premier League Cup last night.
Having fallen behind early, Radhi Jaidi’s side responded with a quick-fire double early in the second half through Josh Sims and Marcus Barnes.
But they were caught out from another corner as Leeds levelled and the Yorkshiremen dealt the killer blow five minutes later when striker Ryan Edmonson pounced for all three points.
With two Group H matches remaining, Saints have surrendered top spot to Newcastle, but are still in contention to progress.
The match provided good entertainment for a 2,800-plus crowd at the i2i Stadium in Tadcaster, but Jaidi was disappointed with the manner in which Saints conceded.
He told the club’s official website: “I’m really disappointed with the way we conceded goals tonight.
“We're past that level, in terms of conceding sloppy goals from set-plays.
“It's something we must address and rectify immediately. Either we work to improve that aspect, or change the personnel if we need to.”
