ARMED police wearing balaclavas arrested four people as part of a crackdown on illegal weapons.

Firearms officers were seen detaining two men on The Bassett Avenue on January 29.

According to an eye witness the arrests took place near the Chilworth Roundabout.

The witness told the Daily Echo: "I passed an electrician's van with the driver's window smashed.

“Another van was in front, it appeared to be undercover police.

“Two men were on their knees with armed police in balaclavas detaining them."

Hampshire police say four people have been arrested.

A spokesperson said: "Two men aged 33 and 39 both from London, were arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm.

"A 51-year-old man from Southampton was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to possess a firearm.

"A 58-year-old man from Southampton was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to possess a firearm and drugs offences.

"They are currently in police custody."
