A TEENAGE girl has fought off a man who tried to grab her on a Southampton street.

A 16-year-old girl was followed by a man who tried to talk to her before attempting to grab her in Millbrook.

The girl was able to break-free from his grip and run away before contacting the police.

The incident happened near the junction of Cuckmere Lane and Brookwood Road on Wednesday.

It has been said that the incident happened at around 11.30am that morning.

Now police officials appealing for witnesses who might have seen the man or his car.

It has been reported that the man was driving a black Mercedes and is described as a young black male of medium build.

A spokesperson from Hampshire Constabulary said: "We are appealing for witnesses or information following an incident where

"A 16-year-old was followed by a man in a black Mercedes in Southampton.

"The incident occurred at around 11.30am near the junction of Cuckmere Lane and Brookwood Road, on Wednesday, January 30.

"The girl reported that the man had followed her and tried to speak with her before attempting to grab her. She managed to break free and ran away.

"If you saw anything or have any information about this incident, please call 101 and quote reference 44190036377."

In a comment, Millbrook ward councillor Steven Galton explained that attempted abductions are "extremely rare" in the area.

He said: "Firstly I am glad to hear the girl is fine and I'm sure the police will investigate this incident fully; issuing any advice or warnings they feel necessary.

"Attempted abductions are extremely rare in Southampton and the police advice of staying aware of your surroundings is good advice for us to follow at all times."
