SOUTHAMPTON is to host a festival of light in the heart of the city headed by an illuminated traditional Chinese dragon this month.

The Lantern Parade will take place on Sunday at Guildhall Square and is open to the public.

Visitors are encouraged to take part in a lantern-building work shop in the John Hansard Gallery from 3pm.

Throughout the afternoon, participants can also sample Thai Chi, a dragon dance and meet Mr Panda and Hello Kitty in the Guildhall Square.

The parade will take place at 5pm outside the gallery and travel through Above Bar to the Bargate area and back to the John Hansard Gallery via the city parks.

Events held outside in the square are weather permitting and will not go ahead if it rains.

The parade will be headed by an illuminated Chinese dragon which will dance through the streets.

This will be followed by the lanterns and a Chinese lion dance at the rear of the parade.

All lanterns will be lit by LED lights. For people who are unable to attend the lantern workshop, some spare lanterns will be available.

Alternatively, visitors are encouraged to join in the parade with their torches. The parade will be coordinated by volunteer stewards.
