SHE IS the face who works tirelessly to ensure that data is recorded about patients who have experienced a major trauma.

Jane Smart, 46 works for the Trauma Audit Research Network at University Hospital Southampton.

She has been nominated for the Daily Echo’s Readers Choice Award as part of University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust’s Hospital Hero’s Awards.

She has been nominated by Mark Ainsworth-Smith who is a Consultant Pre-Hospital Care Practitioner.

Mark said: "Jane is one of the unsung and unseen heroes who works at UHS and very kindly provides a secure feedback loop so that our crews can receive feedback on their trauma patients.

"This often includes what injuries the patients had, the results of tests, such as CT scans, and what the patient’s outcome was.

" This means that our crews can learn from each case and improve the care they deliver to other patients in the future. It also brings a sense of closure for our crews who often have to deal with truly awful injuries.

"Jane works tirelessly, often answering emails at weekends and in the evenings, to ensure that our ambulance crews receive feedback.

"She is always cheerful and helpful and she totally deserves to be a Hospital Hero.

"She may not be directly involved in frontline patient care, but her work is directly improving the care that we deliver to our seriously injured patients."

When Jane was asked about how she felt to be nominated she said: "It is really exciting and I'm really proud.

"My job is brilliant as I get to see the whole patient journey and I like being able to help.

"It is a really interesting job and the data we are collecting is making a difference and that is brilliant."

Jane who has been working for the NHS for the past ten years added: "It's nice to be recognised.

"Everyone here works really hard."

You still have time to nominate your hospital hero. A volunteer, a nurse working long hours, or a midwife bringing a new born baby into the world, are all worthy of a nomination.
