I FEEL I must reply to the recent letter from Mr Terry Butler regarding his criticism of the Southampton Eye Unit (February 14).

I attend three clinics there and, yes, I have to wait often for very lengthy times before I’m seen by a consultant or doctor but I consider that and the taxi fare a small price to pay for the care I receive in the effort to save my sight.

I believe this unit is one of the best NHS eye centres in the country and we are fortunate to have such easy access to it.

I have attended this unit since it opened and, prior to that, the old Eye Hospital, and will be forever grateful for the care I’ve received despite the waits.

I also attend the main hospital and the waiting times there vary, but again I’m very grateful for the care and treatment I receive.
