AN investigation has been launched after part of a sprinkler casing fell on top of a baby at her Southampton home.

Five-month-old Esmae Marston was taken to hospital after she was struck by a piece of the casing which fell from the ceiling.

The baby was stuck by the material while she was in her car seat at the family’s council owned flat in Hampton Towers in International Way.

Now her mum Chantel, 24, says she is worried for her children’s safety.

The mum-of-three, who also has a five year old daughter called Alexis and a four year old daughter called Sophia said: “The sprinklers were fitted around a year and a half ago.

“This situation has put me on edge and I’m scared my children are not safe in my flat.

“I thought the sprinkler had been put up properly, but a worker from the maintenance team came out and looked at it and said it had not been secured correctly.

“I have told people in the building to check theirs as I couldn’t live with myself if someone else got seriously hurt.”

“I dread to think what would have happened to my baby if the whole thing had fallen down.”

Chantel added: “Apart from the mark on her head, the doctors said she was ok but to keep an eye on her.

“This is not fair on my children, I want to move from here now because of this and at the moment I am staying with friends at the weekend.”

“A worker from the maintenance company, CLC, came out and took photos.

“The health and safety manager was helpful and said someone should be coming round and securing the sprinkler casing but nothing has happened yet.”

A spokesperson from the maintenance and refurbishment company, CLC said: “CLC are committed to the health and safety of all residents, we are currently working with Southampton City Council to investigate this incident.”

A spokesperson from Southampton City Council added they take the health and safety of residents “very seriously”, and were investigating.
