HUNDREDS of runners took part in a milestone event.

Almost 300 people pounded the paths of Royal Victoria Country Park on Saturday to celebrate the 7th birthday of Netley Abbey Parkrun.

The event sees amateur athletes running through the park every Saturday morning at 9am.

But last Saturday's run was a special one which ended with birthday cake for all the participants.

Organiser Peter Ingason said: "The event has grown from less than 100 people and has gone up to almost 300. Everybody is welcome, kids and adults, it is just a great way to get people out there on a Saturday morning. The idea is that everybody from the local community gets together. There is more to it than just running a 5k. "

On Saturday about 30 people also completed the From the Couch to 5k course which is organised by Netley Abbey Runners.
