THE M27 has been closed after a crash caused fuel to spill across the carriageway.

The motorway is currently closed between junction 11 and 12 heading eastbound and emergency services are at the scene.

Police have warned motorists to stay away from the area.

A spokesman said: "The closure is likely to be in place for some time while recovery of the vehicle takes place. Diversions are in place."

The incident involved a car and HGV.

According to Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service(HFRS) a lorry possibly suffered a blow out, hit central reservation and caused "a large amount of debris".

In a tweet HFRS added: "Lorry also suffered damage to fuel tank resulting in leak of diesel."

Crews from Fareham were called to the scene at 8.30am today.

In a statement Highways England said: "Road users travelling eastbound should follow the 'Hollow Circle' diversion symbol and exit the M27 at J11.

"Take the third exit and join the A27, continue along the A27 through Portchester and Portsbridge Interchange. Re-join the M27 at J12.

Road users are advised to allow additional time and consider alternative routes for their journey."
