I WAS pleased to read in Saturday’s Echo that the person who cruelly killed a cockerel with a skewer was given a prison sentence and disqualified from keeping animals for five years – but it should have been longer. There is no justification in tormenting a creature in this way and anyone doing so needs to be punished severely.
However, lots of animals receive cruelty and abuse on farms and abattoirs every day in order that they can provide us with meat and dairy produce.
There is no such thing as humane slaughter and I think everyone should visit an abattoir if they want to eat meat.
