British scientists have joined the race to produce meat grown in a lab rather than reared on a farm.

They have now grown animal cells on blades of grass, in a step towards cultured meat.

We asked readers if they would eat lab-grown meat.

  • Anastasija Bikova, a 20-year-old student and shipping company worker from Southampton, said: "It depends on the ingredients and how it's grown. I would consider the taste. If it was bad for my health I would not. If it was grown in worse conditions than normal meat I would not."
  • Isabel Lewsey, a 60-year-old mental health nurse from Bitterne said: "If it was vegetarian I would try it but I don't eat normal meat. I am not vegan, I eat eggs and dairy. I am a vegetarian for environmental reasons. But, I do not know much about it."
  • Susan Turner, a 68-year-old retired catering worker from Southampton, said: "No, I would not. Because it does not seem right that they make something like that. I like to know where my food comes from. I would not eat rubbish. It's hard to even think about. It should be grown naturally."
  • Tim Furmidge, a 51-year-old worker at Southampton City Council originally from the Isle of Wight said: "I would probably prefer it straight from a farm and real animal. British farmers tend to look after their stock. Keep the whole environment natural."
