MORE than 100 protestors took to the proposed site of a major housing development in Otterbourne.

Villagers are again campaigning against development company Gladman, which has approached Winchester City Council to build 90 homes on the field behind The Old Forge pub in Main Road.

The firm first sought permission in August 2016, but withdrew the application in May 2017 after a long battle with residents, who filed a total of 315 objections.

The new application is almost identical to the last, which has sparked anger amongst residents.

Carol Hawkins, a member of Save Otterbourne in 2016, has helped revive the action group: “We got around 140 people on the field. Thankfully it had stopped raining from the day before, so everyone could get out and show their support.

“The protest just goes to show that everyone is of the same mind - that it is important we all object.

“We are all supporting each other. The group now has 20 people knocking doors to tell people about the situation and help people to object if they need to know how.”

The field is one of the biggest greenspaces in Otterbourne and is frequently used by dog walkers.

Carol added: “The owners of the field don’t seem to be looking after the field anymore. It feels like they’re letting go to try to make us let go.

“But it’s a very well-used area, and mental health comes into question, too. Having greenspaces is important, you can’t just have buildings everywhere. That’s why lots of people move here for a rural scene.”

So far the city council has received more than 150 objections. Gladman has been unavailable for comment.

A planning decision is due by March 27.
