The government has proposed that junk food advertisements on social media and TV could be banned before 9pm to fight obesity. We asked readers if they think would be effective in stopping kids easting junk food and improving people's health

  • Andrei Girip, a 19-year-old computer science student at the University of Southampton, said: "I think it will reduce the amount of junk food people that eat. I would reduce the amount I eat but I do not eat that much any way. Most of the time children get excited when they watch TV."
  • Melanie Horstead, a 56-year-old housewife from Thornhill, said: "If they ban sugar, sweets and cakes then yes they would be able to. If they stop selling junk food yes. But kids will be kids. So I don't think it will stop them from eat it."
  • Moira Bates, a 62-year-old retired Biology teacher from Southampton, said: "I think they should ban the adverts and the junk food because of the obesity epidemic. It will improve their health. I think we should teach them how to cook proper food."
  • Bianca Suffra, an 18-year-old restaurant worker from Portswood, said: "I think it is a good idea because it will improve their health. But, I do not think it will stop. I eat junk food but I would like to eat less."
