PLANS for more than 70 new council homes in Winchester have been signed off by civic chiefs.

Winchester City Council's housing committee last backed the full business case for The Valley housing scheme, in Stanmore.

The development already has planning permission for 77 new homes and will include a mix of one, two and three-bedroom flats, two and three-bedroom houses and a three-bedroom bungalow.

Winchester City Council leader and portfolio holder for housing Cllr Caroline Horrill said: “This is fantastic news and it means that we can make real inroads in reducing the council waiting list and ensuring that our residents can live in the district.

“This scheme is also a key part of our strategy to build 1,000 homes over the next 10 years and also continue to provide a range of housing options for residents.”

The housing development will offer a mix of affordable rented and shared ownership opportunities for the district’s residents.

Building work is expected to start in April, and will benefit from a £3.2million cash injection from Homes England, with the council seeking to secure further funds.
