ANGRY residents have spoken out about plans unveiled for a “landmark” waterfront tower block.

Ocean Village residents shared their outrage about the Maritime Walk development at a public consultation yesterday.

One resident described the designs for the plans as “ugly”.

Others were concerned about parking and traffic.

The proposal is for a 250ft private rented residential development to be built on land occupied by a car park behind the Picture House.

The block will have 222 units, providing a mix of one, two and three-bed apartments and is set to be the second tallest building in Southampton – just 12ft short of nearby Moresby Tower

There will be 27 on-site parking spaces including four disabled bays, and additional parking will be available for residents within the Ocean Car Park via a paid-for permit scheme.

Residents will also have the use of a concierge, bike workshop, a library, gym and a work study space.

Father Ray Lyons, who lives in Pacific Close, said: “Ocean Village has been grossly over developed and the design for the building looks ugly.

“We already have parking problems and residents will have to pay large fees to park in the multi-story.”

Robert Dugdale, 60, a resident of Alexandra Wharf said: “This is detrimental to the marina and the building will block the sun. The design looks out of character and it will be an eyesore as I don’t see how it will be able to be maintained.”

Kristi Roger, the development director of MDL Marinas Group, said: “The development is the last stage of the 2006 master plan which aimed to bring more vibrancy into the area.

“The multi-story car park was designed for another development, and this fills the need for high-quality housing. We will take comments from the consultation into consideration.”

The plans for the development are set to be submitted by early May and the planning decision is anticipated to be made in late July or early August.
