MAJOR engineering works are taking place overnight for the next two months on the railway south of Winchester.

Network Rail is relaying track in the Shawford area from a contractors' base at Bushfield Camp, near Badger Farm.

The agency says the work will run 1am to 8am until June 2.

In a letter local residents were told: "This work will involve renewing the railway track - we will excavate the track bed and replace the rail and its components using a specialist machine. This may result in periods of noise disturbance, whilst the machine is in operation."

Network Rail said it is contractually obliged to work at times that cause the least disruption to train services, hence the work at night and at weekends.

The letter added: "The equipment we use means some disturbance is unavoidable, but we will make every effort to minimise any unnecessary noise. Furthermore those working on site are briefed on working responsibly in the local community. We expect staff to be considerate, polite and courteous at all times."
